Cost Savings Measures Discussed

Richard Hogate chaired the August meeting and members discussed cost savings measures being implemented or discussed at their cities/agencies. Most of the agencies are currently under a 5% cut scenario with 10% and 15% cuts being proposed and not replacing positions that have been vacated. Torrance is looking to rent out their jail to "high visibility" prisoners on the weekends and has outlined their savings ideas into a comprehensive report. South Gate is looking into bringing some outsourced functions back into the city. The City of Brea has done an extensive study to determine where savings can be realized. Bill Gellman shared a report that was put out that outlined many areas of savings. LAUSD is enacting furloughs for all staff and Torrance USD is offering early retirement with a 5 year annuity. Thanks to all of the agencies that shared their ideas.

Info Needed & Shared

Patty Romo, City of Pasadena, is looking for frozen food vendors to supply their jail. If you have any vendors, please let Patty know.

Congratulations to Nancy Pickard, the new Purchasing Manager for the City of Fullerton. Nancy replaces Bill Niedfelt who retired last December. Nancy has been working as Acting Purchasing Manager since that time. We know she'll do a great job!

Cynthia Duprey, City of South Gate, would like to know if any agencies have upgraded their postage machines recently? She is also looking for an RFP for GASB34 requirements, vendors to sell or consign heavy equipment and Housing Dept. software program to track HUD, Section 8, etc. Any info would be appreciated.

Robert Norman, City of Redondo Beach would like your input regarding the use of OEM toners vs. remanufactured. He is also looking on information on how other cities/agencies handle their vending machines in the City.

Bill Gellman, City of Brea, has approx. 30 safety vests that are approx. 10 years old and was wondering about the disposal process. If any agency has a great way of disposal please contact Bill. He also has approx. $50,000 worth of old IT equipment and wanted to know if any cities/agencies have sold on EBay, etc?

Marc Monforte, LAUSD, shared current bids for AA and AAA batteries. The pricing is $0.175 ea through Martronics in Georgia. Please contact Marc if you'd like further info. He also has a bid for 6 volt lantern batteries at $4.07 ea.
